Focus: Creative – numbers to 1000

Over the last few weeks we have been studying place value and the number system. Your task this week is to create a quiz, game or any other task that we could use in the class to help with numbers to 1000.

You could choose to make your game about:
• adding and subtracting 10, 100 and 1000
• ordering numbers
• partitioning numbers

We will of course be looking at all the games and hopefully playing a few of them.

This week’s homework is creative and is due on Thursday 18 October.

I can show what a home is.

This half term, our topic is Time Travel. We have looked at what is old and new (in relation to toys) and placed toys in chronological order. We have now moved onto looking at homes and how these have changed over the years – all the way from Celtic home to modern homes. Last week, we took a trip around Wetherby looking at all the different houses around.

For this homework, we would like you to show what a home is. This can be presented in any creative way the children wish. They could talk about:

What is important about a home?

What do homes look like?

What did homes look like in the past?

This week’s homework is practice makes perfect:

Learn Roman numerals so you can read and write any number!

  • What is your birthday in Roman numerals?
  • What is today’s date in Roman numerals?
  • Can you spot a building, clock, film advert, book or any other sign with Roman numerals when you’re out and about?

Focus: Practice makes perfect

This week, we have been adding 10, 100 and 1000 to different starting numbers and paying attention to which digits in the number will: always, sometimes or never change.

Complete the sheet of problems stuck into your book. If it helps, you could always draw out base 10 or place value counters to help you.
We also now offer a weekly homework club where children can use maths resources to help them complete this task if they find it tricky.

This week’s homework is a practice makes perfect and is due in on Thursday 11 October.

Year 1:

This week we have been learning more about numbers. We have been looking at ordinal numbers – know what 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc is.

Year 2:

We have been learning to count in multiples of 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s. When we are counting in 10s, we can count from any number – e.g. starting on 4, 2, 7.

This week the whole school has the same Talk Time homework which should be completed by Thursday 04 October.

If I could travel in time, who would I take with me and why?

This homework, which links to our current big topic (Time Travel), is a chance for children to think about who is important to them and why. There are many factors which may influence your child’s decision:

  • What makes a good travel companion?
  • Are there any skills that would help during time travel?
  • Who do they enjoy spending time with and why?
  • Do they choose someone they know or someone they know of?

Children should discuss this with someone at home and be ready to discuss their viewpoint as part of our weekly homework review next week.

This week’s homework is Talk Time and is due on Thursday 27 September.

This half term, our Christian value is friendship. In school and in collective worship, we’ve been looking at what makes a good friend and examples of being a good friend from the Bible. With your family, discuss the following questions and be prepared to talk about your answers on Friday 28 September – make notes (or ask an adult) in your homework book to help you.

What qualities do you look for in a friend?

There’s an old saying that goes, “In order to have good friends, you have to be a good friend.” What does that mean? Do you think it’s true? Why? What are the benefits of having friends who are different from us?

Focus: Creative

Over the last few weeks in our ‘Where in the world?’ topic, we’ve learnt lots of facts about our world: continents, countries, capitals etc.

Your task is to create a board game, quiz or other style of game that you could play at home or in school to help you learn and remember facts about the world.

This week the whole school has the same Practice Makes Perfect homework which should be completed by Thursday 20 September.

I know some Where in the World facts.

This homework, which links to our current mini-topic (Where in the World), is a chance for children to show off their geographical knowledge. Children should learn and remember (one of our 8Rs for learning) some facts about the world that they find interesting. There are many things children could learn about:

  • the seven continents
  • capital cities
  • names of the oceans
  • the countries of the UK, Europe or the world
  • the population of some countries
  • interesting facts about a place they find interesting or have been
  • how to say a common word or phrase in several languages (for example, hello!)
  • and, of course, there are many more facts children could find out and learn

This homework should be evidenced in homework books with children ready (another of our 8Rs for learning) to show off their new-found geographical knowledge as part of our weekly homework review next week.
